Bee hives usually have only one queen, but sometimes end up with more than one. Sometimes the “extra” queen will leave the hive with a swarm to establish a new colony. Other times the bees will simply kill the extra one by forming a tight ball around her until she overheats and dies. I have heard and read about this but have never seen it happen first hand until today. I noticed a ball of bees on the top bars of one of the hives and knew that they were killing a queen. The ball was so cohesive that I could pick it up with my hive tool, as you can see from the photo. I opened the ball with my finger, and sure enough a young queen was in the middle.
