The bees are carrying quite a bit of pollen, helped by the dry weather and the abundant wildflowers. Thien captured this great shot of three bees negotiating the landing strip while carrying large pollen loads. They probably don’t care much for the grass that I placed in their way to try and prevent the stronger hives from robbing this new colony.
Here is a nice photo of some of the pollen we are collecting from a few of these stronger hives. This is about a day’s worth of pollen from one hive. I have to empty the traps every evening so the pollen doesn’t mildew or get carried off by the fire ants. The pollen collection has increased daily as the bees adjust to their pollen traps and their new hive entrances.
