These girls are digging into the fresh pollen patty that Mark prepared for them. This is out at Deadman Creek bee yard, where we visited last weekend during one of the most beautiful winter days we’ve had in a while – lower 70s and full of sun. We had a great time out there.
There are commercial pollen substitutes that you can buy and feed the bees, but this batch is the real thing – made from the pollen that we collected from the bees last fall. I mix it with sugar water until the consistency is like peanut butter. It looks and smells good enough to eat! As you can see from the to photo, they go right to it. There is a lack of pollen right now, so this should help the bees get the nourishment they need until some flowers start to bloom, hopefully by the end of this month. All of a sudden it seems like a long winter, and we’ll be happy for some warm days again.
